This night does not know the words of introduction
This night with little robots and lasers, with Scalextric toy cars
This night dirtied by grease
This night that throws everything in your face
This night that is kidnapping hitchhikers and shutting them away
in an attic filled with toy animals and clowns
This night that is secretly looking at the papers of a poet who
no longer believes
This long night of allegory
This night the old differences are coming to a head, shades pulled
down, the shop shut up
This night anxiously anticipating from the crowd
the announcement of a new pope
This night when white tigers are dreaming of the wind-up bird
This night with neither tongue nor eyes, a scalp from which
something is slowly leaking
This night with its cleansing milks, its goddamned braces
This night that's rocking you, this silky purring beside you, that
leans deep inside
This night, it plays nicely with you & leaves you bloodied
This night that's smoking despite the ban on burning
This night throttled by the trepidation of a first entry
This night that unplugs souls
This night that exits the gates of the Machine ready to sacrifice itself
for a noble cause
This night of Lace and Extermination
This night carved out of wood
This night, room and distance, with bodies of silence surrounding
This night smelling of dough and fresh paint
This night when bread and flesh are black as in a poem
by Antonio Gamoneda
This night does not play the fool when it comes to love
This night is a revolutionary with fierce breasts and unattainable ideals
This night disarming nuclear warheads
This night overturning drilling platforms and plunging them to great depths
This night filling with horror those who thought that imagination
could not
This night with great and dimmed stars like the eyes of Emily
over Amherst

I remember a brick house
and a long alley descending toward a courtyard in shadow
where in August the unmown grass stood high,
up to my knees. I can see Irina's body stretched out there,
among the thistles, the small insects, the boxwoods - and the world
slowing to the rhythm of the rise and fall
of her chest, until full abandonment of the self. An ecstatic smile.
I keep in my mind her thin ankle (a little reddened where
the strap of her sandal rubbed)
and her white thigh, all but singing, stirred
by a gust of wind out of nowhere.
Nearly two years have gone by.
It's summer again, an overwhelming season
that dictates even my least movement.
In the meantime her body has filled out,
she now wears her hair longer
(they tell me) and the fury, oh well, my fury has diminished,
distilled by so many things, so many words.
I'm a lonely, polite man
imagining more and more often
a brick house
and a long alley
descending toward a cold place in shadow,
to which there's no return.

macină-n gol cuvinte
viaţa mea nu are sens

I write only at night due to a painful disorder
urged on by a premonition of disaster
my voice soft as a millstone
grinding words in vain
before they can ever reach my hand
now that the paper has shrunk before my eyes
I'm writing in small letters disregarding punctuation
disregarding my body and the say filling up my larynx
I lie in wait
my life is pointless
if anything eludes my scrutiny
my father was an officer
even now his militant shadow terrifies me
crawling along the walls at daybreak
he's almost an old man now
he's still in good shape
he hardly ever scolds me these days
for being clumsy and undisciplined
it drove him nuts
that I didn't produce
that I poured my soul
into matters beyond his comprehension
I write only at night and this emboldens me
my cheeks searing
as if I'm lying in the snow
in Constitution Square
and watching Parliament burn.

Today I woke up knowing everything,
though I'd prefer anything to that:
to take, at last, a deep breath,
to be able to unwind a good thought inside the walls of my skull.
I wish my clothes didn't smell of mildew and sweat,
that rumble growing louder in my head,
not just firecrackers and sparklers, as on Christmas,
as if someone was hysterically beating
the walls of a huge, empty vessel
with his fists.
For five days, I know:
I'm the envelope of anthrax you receive some Thursday at the office.
I'm your envious whine.
I'm the razorblade under your tongue.
I'm all the things you like, all that's cancerous and obscure.
Will you remember me, supermarket man?
I'm nobody. I think I'm the devil incarnate.
I'm the dry cough you cannot shake.
I'm the meanness and hatred of the year 2005.
For five days it's fever and loneliness.
For five days only pigs and night before my eyes,
the red of insomnia
and hot tea, my body coiled under sheets
run through with thick, devastating phlegm.
For five days my thin arms
reach out purposely towards nobody
because I am nobody
and the world is my kingdom.

...
I know my poetry means nothing
other than in a world you are absent from.
I have a hoof in place of a heart
and a hair ball instead of a liver.
Do you think I carried the candle for it?
What are you staring at, József Attila?
A blazing accordeon riffles through
the compacted singing of a chunk of meat
which must be gulped down in hiding.
Amidst the rabble, the shy senile cannibal
is kissing his own hands
splattering with saliva
the cheek of a coddled swine
who's laughing and staggering
staggering horribly on the gallows.
